Texas Holdem Poker Strategies

The game of Texas Holdem is so exciting because anything can happen, at virtually any stage of the game. If you’ve never played this type of poker before, here are the basic strategies. You use a combination of cards you’re dealt (unseen by others) and a pool of community cards revealed in three intervals (flop, turn, and river) to assemble a winning hand.

Before you see any of the community cards, betting begins. This is where a player’s poker strategies really come into play. You’ll need to judge whether the Texas Holdem cards you’ve initially been dealt have a chance of scoring big. These initial bets (called “blind bets”) are a great place to start a bluff if you want to present an ironclad front to your opponents. If you’re dealt only low cards, though, consider folding.

Community Cards and Texas Holdem Poker Strategies

So you’ve made it past the blind, and are still in the game. Now, take a look at the flop—the first three face-up community cards. Do any of these cards help you build a winning hand? You can use any or all of these cards, or none of them. The same applies to the next two cards, called the turn and the river, respectively.

In Texas Holdem, it’s a good idea to be flexible with the hand you’re trying to build. You may get discouraged when the turn didn’t bring you the suit you wanted, but it might not have helped your opponent, either. Stay in the game and keep betting, especially if you’re building a flush or an open-ended straight; the river may bring you just what you need to complete your hand.
